A few months ago, I received a plain, white postcard in the mail informing me that “as of October 1, 2020, Bike Magazine had ceased publication.” The card went on to tell me that they were “pleased” to inform me that the remainder of my subscription would be filled with Men’s Journal. Not Powder or any of the other adventure sports rags that American Media LLC owns. Men’s Journal.
About a decade ago, I moved from Maine to Montana. Not one of those famous towns like Bozeman and Missoula which have been featured in big-budget movies or the glossy pages of adventure magazines. No, I moved back to my industrial hometown of Billings.
I was addicted to travel and Ian and Justine were my dealers. But what these guys were peddling was the free sample. I, however, need the real stuff. The stuff of adventure.
The real experience was meeting a great guy who is passionate about what he does and who was willing to open a door to a world that is very different from the world I wake up and inhabit every day.
The first blog post always seems the hardest. You have all this blank space to fill and you don’t know where to begin. I’m certain that this blog will change over time, as I move through projects and my constantly shifting focus drifts from point to point like a dog wandering through a park.
